Leather softening

Leather exposed to the sun goes stiff — fastest of all in a car. Softening brings back its suppleness before it starts to crack.

Leather stiffens because it loses the oils that kept it supple. In a car this happens fastest: in summer a seat heats up to several dozen degrees, and in winter it goes through a frost–heating cycle several times a day. The symptoms are always the same — the material feels stiff, and a web of fine cracks appears at the folds.

This is the moment to act. Stiff leather cracks, and a crack is damage to be filled — a job several times more expensive.

How we do it

  • Cleaning — a softening product won't get through a layer of dirt.
  • Moisturising and conditioning in several rounds, with time to soak in.
  • Working on the folds and edges, where the leather is most tired.
  • Protection, so the result lasts longer than a few weeks.

A realistic view of the result

The leather regains its suppleness and feels soft to the touch. Existing cracks don't disappear — softening stops the process, it doesn't reverse it. If cracks are already visible, we combine this service with damage filling.

For a car parked outdoors, it's worth repeating the treatment every year or two. It is the cheapest thing you can do for a leather interior.

Leather treatments — other services

Leather cleaning

The starting point for every restoration. On dirty leather no colour or protector will hold.

Painting and dyeing

Painting and dyeing

Colours matched to the type of leather: one kind for pigmented car upholstery, another for aniline and semi-aniline furniture leather.

Impregnation and protection

Products that protect against UV, water and denim dye transfer — the most common cause of stains on light-coloured seats.

Leather de-glossing

With long use, leather turns shiny where it is touched. De-glossing brings back its factory matt look.
