Seat and rear bench restoration

The most common job: a worn driver's seat bolster and a sagging cushion. Cleaning, filling, re-colouring and protecting the whole surface so the colour matches.

The driver's seat bolster wears through first — from getting in and out, a few thousand times a year. Then the cushion gives way, a web of fine cracks appears, and the colour at the contact points turns lighter than the rest. That is not a material fault, just normal wear, and in most cases it can be reversed without replacing the cover.

Restoration makes sense as long as the leather still holds together. If the material is worn right through over a large area or crumbles at the touch, it is more honest to stitch a new cover — and we will say so, rather than take money for something that will come back to us in a year.

How we do it

  • Condition assessment: type of leather, depth of the wear, whether the colour can be matched to the rest of the interior.
  • Deep cleaning — without it no colour or protector has anything to hold on to.
  • Leather softening, if the material has hardened in the sun.
  • Filling with leather repair compound and grain matching, so the repaired spot does not stand out as a smooth patch.
  • Re-colouring of the entire surface, not just the patch — otherwise the colour will not match.
  • Sealing with a protective layer.

What to expect

A restored seat does not look new — it looks looked-after. Deep creases stay, because they are a mark left by shape, not by colour. The wear-through goes, the uneven shade goes, the matt finish comes back.

A typical set of seats spends a few days with us. A single seat can be ready sooner — it depends on how much drying time the successive layers need.
